{"id":21149,"date":"2021-04-28T13:42:43","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T17:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=21149"},"modified":"2021-04-30T09:44:24","modified_gmt":"2021-04-30T13:44:24","slug":"arlene-foster-to-step-down-as-first-minister-and-dup-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=21149","title":{"rendered":"Arlene Foster To Step Down As First Minister And DUP Leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2.59441803.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2.59441803.png 540w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2.59441803-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/>Arlene Foster will stand down as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party and as Northern Ireland&#8217;s First Minister in the face of mounting discontent among her party.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Foster said she will stand down as party leader on May 28th and as First Minister at the end of June.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, she said: \u201cIt is important to give space over the next few weeks for the party officers to make arrangements for the election of a new leader. When elected, I will work with the new leader on transition arrangements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Foster said she intended to \u201cdepart the political stage\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been the privilege of my life to serve the people of Northern Ireland as their First Minister and to represent my home constituency of Fermanagh\/South Tyrone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI first entered the Assembly in 2003 and undoubtedly the journey of the last eighteen years has been memorable. There are many people who have helped and supported me throughout that period and I will always be grateful for the kindness and support shown to me by them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhilst there have been many difficult and testing times for the executive it remains my firm view that Northern Ireland has been better served having local ministers at this time.
