sizes=\"(max-width: 541px) 100vw, 541px\" \/>The funeral of Britain&#8217;s Prince Philip was marked across the island of Ireland on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>In Northern Ireland, Stormont\u2019s First Minister Arlene Foster observed the national minute\u2019s silence for Philip\u2019s funeral at Enniskillen Castle.<\/p>\n<p>The DUP leader was joined by party councilors and piper Aaron Elliott outside the Co Fermanagh castle to observe the silence as the funeral service began.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Foster said her prayers were with Queen Elizabeth and the royal family as the duke was laid to rest in St George\u2019s Chapel in Windsor.<\/p>\n<p>Philip, officially known as the Duke of Edinburgh, died at Windsor Castle on Friday April 9th, aged 99.<\/p>\n<p>His funeral took place on Saturday afternoon within the grounds of Windsor Castle in England.<\/p>\n<p>While the minute\u2019s silence was held across the UK there was a two-gun salute in tribute to the duke at Hillsborough Castle in Co Down.<\/p>\n<p>One round was fired from the castle to mark the beginning of the silence while another marked the end.<\/p>\n<p>Gun salutes were also heard across the UK, including at Cardiff Castle and Edinburgh Castle, as well as on Royal Navy warships deployed in Portsmouth, Devonport and overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Flowers were laid beneath a tree planted by the duke during his first visit to Hillsborough Castle, the queen\u2019s official residence in Northern Ireland, in 1949.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/EzLmer5VEAky8dX-1024x627.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"392\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-21013\" 300w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/EzLmer5VEAky8dX-768x470.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>In the Republic, the tricolor was flown at half-mast on all State buildings to mark the death of the duke.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c1ras an Uachtar\u00e1in, the residence of the President of Ireland, and Iveagh House, the headquarters of the Department of Foreign Affairs, were among the buildings where the flags were lowered.<\/p>\n<p>The UK ambassador to Ireland Paul Johnston thanked the Irish Government for what he described as \u201cthis very special gesture\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Under Ireland\u2019s national flag guidelines, the flag can be flown at half-mast on \u201call prominent buildings\u201d on the death of a national or international
