Dr Ronan Glynn apologized to those feeling frustrated or angered by a suggestion that tough Covid-19 restrictions could remain in place until the summer months.<\/p>\n
Dr Glynn said caution is needed in the ongoing pandemic until a majority of the country is vaccinated by the end of June, pointing to surging case numbers in the other European countries.<\/p>\n
However, he also insisted there is hope and expressed gratitude \u201cto the millions of people who complied with public health measures on St Patrick\u2019s Day.\u201d<\/p>\n
The National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) did not make its recommendations lightly, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have sought over and over again over the past year to acknowledge the fatigue, the frustration, the exhaustion that people are feeling with these measures. We know how difficult it is for people in this country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Dr Glynn said that despite having made good progress over the past 10 weeks, Ireland remains in a \u201cprecarious position\u201d in the pandemic.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a result of that I simply said that we need to be cautious over the next two months because none of us want a fourth wave, we all remember what happened as a result of Christmas and New Year, and none of us want to see that happen again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would ask people, all parts of society, to stick with the key messages over the coming weeks which is that there is hope \u2014 eight out of 10 people will receive the vaccine by the end of June.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can all look forward collectively to much brighter days,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cThings will get gradually easier over the coming short months if we can stop a fourth wave.\u201d<\/p>\n
Also on Friday, Nphet member Professor Philip Nolan acknowledged a message to \u201cdo more\u201d was unpopular but warned that a \u201csmall increase in mobility and contact\u201d had stalled recent progress.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have to highlight this, and yes, encourage each other to do a little bit more to suppress the virus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
His comments came after the Taoiseach refused to \u201cspeculate\u201d on tight Covid-19 restrictions remaining in place until June.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Friday, Miche\u00e1l Martin said the Government will inform the public in the next couple of weeks of any changes to the measures.<\/p>\n
