Miche\u00e1l Martin said a delay to the delivery of AstraZeneca would create a \u201creal problem\u201d for the rollout of the State\u2019s vaccination program.<\/p>\n
But he added that he expected \u201crobust\u201d discussions would be held between the European Commission and AstraZeneca in the coming weeks to try to solve the issue.<\/p>\n
The British company has warned that supplies of its coronavirus vaccine to Europe will be lower than originally anticipated due to production issues.<\/p>\n
Its vaccine is being rolled out in the UK, but the European Union has not yet approved its use. It is expected to make a decision on January 29th.<\/p>\n
Speaking on RT\u00c9 Radio 1, Mr Martin said April, May and June were going to be \u201ckey months\u201d in terms of the rollout of coronavirus vaccines, but that \u201cthe over-70s will be delayed because of AstraZeneca\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cAstra-Zeneca combined with extra volumes of Pfizer\/BioNTech was going to be the catalyst for us to move from a low level of administration of vaccine to a mass vaccination situation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow AstraZeneca puts a real problem in our midst, but we\u2019re gonna have to deal with it and see what else we can do,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Despite the issue, the Fianna F\u00e1il leader said the Government still aims to be in a \u201cmass vaccination scenario\u201d by the end of June.<\/p>\n
He said the delivery of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine had been on time and that there would be other vaccine deliveries.<\/p>\n
But the Fianna F\u00e1il leader admitted that the supply of vaccines overall had been problematic.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur problem in January and February has been delivery \u2013 not getting enough vaccine into the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had delivery of 150,000 vaccines up to the beginning of this week. By the end of this week we\u2019ll have 147,000, administered, so you can see there\u2019s very little in the tank.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re giving it out as fast as we get it in.\u201d<\/p>\n
But he added that by summer Ireland would be in a \u201cchanged environment\u201d due to large scale vaccination that will have been achieved by then.<\/p>\n
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly described the AstraZeneca delay as a \u201creal setback\u201d.<\/p>\n
He tweeted: \u201cThe news from AstraZeneca, which has advised the EU of a reduction in vaccine supply in Feb and March, is a real setback.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe numbers are still tentative and AstraZeneca is due to provide more exact figures at a meeting early next week. Will provide an update as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Up to January 20, some 121,900 people have been vaccinated in Ireland.<\/p>\n
By Sunday, the Taoiseach said the majority of residents and staff of all long term residential facilities will have received a Covid-19 vaccine and that half of all frontline healthcare workers will also have received the jab.<\/p>\n
