This is most certainly the winter of our discontent; we have truly reached our lowest point. There are more deaths from the virus than ever. The vaccine rollout is an undisputed fiasco as the people at the top not doctors or any medical personal are making the decisions… I will say again and again they have to let the experts do their jobs and keep the politics out of this pandemic as it is a killer. <\/p>\n

Now that I\u2019ve got that off my mind, welcome again to the New Year of 2021 that we all hope will be a good one for all of us. It is fair to say that the Irish community have kept the tradition going during all this pandemic. They did it and are doing it by zooming and virtual press briefings with concerts, business meetings, talks, music, theatre, networking breakfasts and a lot more with updates on everything that is Irish. In the mean time Corey Johnson<\/strong>, New York City\u2019s Speaker of the House has said that the Council is continuing to hold the de Blasio Administration accountable for its ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that is something.<\/p>\n

Marty Walsh<\/figcaption><\/figure>I just got a nice bit of news for one of our fellow Irish men and that is Marty Walsh, and you might just say who the hell is Marty Walsh<\/strong>. Martin Joseph Walsh is an\u00a0Irish-American politician from\u00a0Boston,\u00a0Massachusetts. A Democrat, he has served as the 54th\u00a0Mayor of Boston\u00a0since 2014. He was previously a member of the\u00a0Massachusetts House of Representatives, serving in that office from 1997 until 2014 and representing the Thirteenth\u00a0Suffolk\u00a0district. <\/p>\n

On January 7, 2021, it was reported that President-elect\u00a0Joe Biden\u00a0has selected Walsh to serve as the\u00a0United States Secretary of Labor\u00a0in his administration. Now here is the best part: Walsh was born in\u00a0Dorchester, Boston, to John Walsh, an\u00a0Irish American\u00a0originally from Callowfeenish, a\u00a0townland\u00a0near\u00a0Carna,County Galway, and Mary (n\u00e9e O\u2019Malley), from\u00a0Rosmuc. County Galway, Ireland? Is everybody from Galway?<\/p>\n

The couple emigrated to the\u00a0United States\u00a0in the 1950s and gave birth to Marty in 1967. Up yea boyo, Walsh grew up in the\u00a0Savin Hill\u00a0area of Boston\u2019s\u00a0Dorchester\u00a0neighborhood. He was diagnosed with\u00a0Burkitt\u2019s lymphoma\u00a0at age 7, forcing him to miss most of second and third grade and repeat fifth grade. At age 11, after going through years of\u00a0chemotherapy, a scan revealed no traces of the cancer. <\/p>\n

He went to high school at\u00a0The Newman School\u00a0and, in 2009, received a\u00a0bachelor\u2019s degree\u00a0from the\u00a0Woods College of Advancing Studies\u00a0at\u00a0Boston College. Walsh joined the\u00a0Laborers\u2019 Union\u00a0Local 223 at age 21 and served as the union\u2019s president until he became the mayor of Boston. <\/p>\n

He was elected secretary-treasurer and general agent of the Boston Metropolitan District Building Trades Council, a union umbrella group, in the fall of 2010. In 2011, Walsh was named head of the Boston Building Trades, a position that came with a $175,000 yearly salary. Walsh resigned his post when he announced he was running for mayor in 2013. <\/p>\n

Walsh resides in the\u00a0Lower Mills\u00a0neighborhood of\u00a0Dorchester\u00a0with his long-time girlfriend Lorrie Higgins. He is a recovering\u00a0alcoholic, with more than twenty years of continuous sobriety in a\u00a0twelve-step program. Walsh has been a\u00a0season ticket holder\u00a0of football\u2019s\u00a0New England Patriots\u00a0since franchise owner\u00a0Robert Kraft\u00a0bought the team in 1994. He is a\u00a0Catholic. Now where would yea get it, good on yea Marty. <\/p>\n

The Irish Business Organization<\/strong> will be having evening event on Tuesday, January,19th from 6:30 pm to 7:45 pm on Zoom. The guest speaker is none other than the Consul General of Ireland in New York Ciaran Madden<\/strong>. There is a big plus with the inauguration of the 2021 IBO Executive Board. Paul Finnegan<\/figcaption><\/figure>Some more news for you from the Irish Business Organization that has given the 2020 Sean McNeill award to Paul Finnegan<\/strong>, a longtime leader in service to New York\u2019s Irish community. Paul has also been sworn as in as the IBO\u2019s First Vice President. The Irish Examiner USA staff would like to congratulate Paul for all the work that he has done in the past for the New York Irish Center, good on yea Paul.<\/p>\n
