Mr Mulvaney, a former chief of staff to President Donald Trump, said he \u201ccan\u2019t stay\u201d in the role following chaotic scenes in Washington DC when protesters stormed the US Capitol.<\/p>\n
A woman died after being shot and windows were smashed in scenes that saw legislators and aides evacuated to safety.<\/p>\n
Mr Mulvaney was sworn in as Northern Ireland envoy in May.<\/p>\n
He said Mr Trump was \u201cnot the same as he was eight months ago\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe didn\u2019t sign up for what you saw last night,\u201d he told CNBC.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe signed up for making America great again, we signed up for lower taxes and less regulation. The president has a long list of successes that we can be proud of.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut all of that went away yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n
He described the events, which have been condemned across the world, as \u201ccompletely unacceptable and shocking to many people in this country\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat you saw yesterday was an insurrection and people who charged the centre of our government for the specific purpose of stopping a constitutional process,\u201d he told the BBC.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know how else, short of whipping up machine guns and tanks, you would define an insurrection.<\/p>\n
\u201cDonald Trump did not build a bomb that went off yesterday, he did not build the fuse, but he did light it.\u201d<\/p>\n
