{"id":18675,"date":"2020-12-23T12:04:30","date_gmt":"2020-12-23T16:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=18675"},"modified":"2020-12-24T10:06:17","modified_gmt":"2020-12-24T14:06:17","slug":"coronavirus-situation-in-ireland-deteriorating-faster-than-in-rest-of-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=18675","title":{"rendered":"Coronavirus Situation In Ireland Deteriorating Faster Than In Rest Of EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2.56216954.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"420\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2.56216954.png 706w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2.56216954-300x178.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/>The coronavirus situation in Ireland is deteriorating at a faster pace than anywhere in Europe, a senior HSE official has warned.<\/p>\n<p>Chief clinical officer Dr Colm Henry said the infection rate is \u201cfrightening\u201d and the curve is moving in an almost \u201cvertical direction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>His analysis came as HSE chief executive Paul Reid warned of \u201cserious and dangerous\u201d levels of transmission that could lead to a \u201cmassive surge\u201d in hospital admissions after Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Henry told the weekly HSE media briefing there could be 1,500 new confirmed cases of the virus a day by the first week in January.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cWe received this best or second best in Europe in terms of a 14-day incidence (rate of the virus), but in terms of our deterioration over the past week, we\u2019re deteriorating at more rapid pace in seven days than any other country in Europe and so we won\u2019t hold this position for long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Reid added: \u201cFrom our perspective and the HSE, the transmission levels have now reached what I would call very serious and dangerous levels of transmission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have as many concerns now as we would have had in the first phase about the potential impact on what we\u2019re seeing and the transmission levels and the potential impacts looking ahead for health services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It comes as the Taoiseach has warned that a new and more infectious strain of Covid-19 identified in the UK was likely a \u201ckey factor\u201d in Ireland&#8217;s recent surge of infections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see the worst culmination coming together of the rapidly rising cases at an exponential rate, combined with high positivity levels we are seeing coming through our community testing, and that too combined with increasing levels of contacts and what we know will happen in the coming days of further increasing levels of contact,\u201d Mr Reid said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur particular concern relates to that this will all culminate at the same time on the same days that we know we have our high peak \u2013 days after Christmas just after Stephen\u2019s day, the 28th right through to early January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur concern is the lag effect of what we\u2019re seeing coming right now impacting hospitalizations potentially post-Christmas and equally coming at a time when we know we face into our highest level of demand for health services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Reid urged people not to react to the assessment with \u201cfear and distress\u201d and instead take positive action to limit their contacts over the Christmas period.<\/p>\n<p>He also struck an optimistic note in terms of the Pfizer vaccine roll-out in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>He said the first 9,750 doses are due on December 26th, with another consignment of 31,000 jabs days later.
