The unfettered access Northern Ireland has already secured to the EU market was what the rest of the UK was striving to achieve in trade negotiations, Andrew McCormick told an Assembly committee.<\/p>\n
Mr McCormick, who heads up the Executive\u2019s work on Brexit, was giving evidence to the Executive Office Committee on last week\u2019s agreement on the operation of the protocol.<\/p>\n
The protocol was designed to maintain a free-flowing border on the island of Ireland.<\/p>\n
It will see Northern Ireland remain in the single market for goods and apply the EU customs code at its ports.<\/p>\n
Under its terms, Northern Ireland companies will have tariff-free access to the Irish Republic and the wider EU.<\/p>\n
Mr McCormick told committee members that counterparts in Britain were keen to secure similar terms already achieved by Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s actually of course a very significant market advantage and any time I talk to Edinburgh, they\u2019re saying, \u2018Well, you know we\u2019d like that too\u2019 and many traders across the water would like to have that access to EU markets,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn a way it\u2019s what the trade negotiations are all about \u2013 the conditions for GB to have access to sell into the single market and how to get a zero quota\/zero tariff trade deal and they\u2019re having to go through an intense year of negotiations.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut we\u2019ve got it in the protocol, guaranteed and secure \u2013 so that\u2019s definite.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr McCormick insisted the terms of the protocol would not change regardless of whether a wider UK\/EU trade deal materialized.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no mechanism by which they could be overturned,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
