{"id":17631,"date":"2020-11-02T12:57:13","date_gmt":"2020-11-02T16:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=17631"},"modified":"2020-11-03T09:58:48","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T13:58:48","slug":"families-of-the-disappeared-faced-pandemic-style-waits-for-bodies-to-be-recovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=17631","title":{"rendered":"Families Of The Disappeared Faced Pandemic-Style Waits For Bodies To Be Recovered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2.56412417.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2.56412417.jpg 630w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2.56412417-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/>Families of those believed to have been murdered and buried in secret during Northern Ireland\u2019s armed conflict endured decades-long pandemic-style separation from loved ones, supporters said.<\/p>\n<p>A handful donned face masks and braved inclement weather to hold a silent All Souls Day walk remembering the Disappeared at Stormont on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The Disappeared has long been the term for those who vanished, believed to be abducted by republicans who suspected them to be informers for the British.<\/p>\n<p>It is a smear in nationalist circles which is contested by their families.<\/p>\n<p>The ranks of the Disappeared have diminished as bodies were retrieved, but now include Army intelligence officer Captain Robert Nairac and another woman unconnected to the Troubles.<\/p>\n<p>Sandra Peake, who leads the campaign to find them, said: \u201cNormally up to 80 people would be at the walk every year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year because of social distancing there were only eight people there from the families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCovid has given us all a taste of what life is like without family or not participating in the ritual of family burial and having to stay away from families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor some of the families it has been like that for 45 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wave Trauma Centre chief executive attended the procession, prayers and wreath-laying event outside Stormont\u2019s devolved parliament.<\/p>\n<p>A black wreath with white lilies representing those who have yet to be found was laid at the building\u2019s steps.<\/p>\n<p>Columba McVeigh from Donaghmore, Co Tyrone, was one of the first to be murdered and secretly buried in 1975.<\/p>\n<p>The latest search for his remains in Co Monaghan in the Irish Republic ended without success.
