The Premier League giants are reportedly involved in talks over the creation of a new European Premier League, which it is claimed has the backing of the sport\u2019s world governing body FIFA.<\/p>\n
But UEFA claimed such a competition \u201cwould inevitably become boring\u201d.<\/p>\n
The European governing body, whose president Aleksander Ceferin last December branded reports of a world league \u201cfar-fetched\u201d and \u201cinsane\u201d, said in a statement: \u201cThe UEFA president has made it clear on many occasions that UEFA strongly opposes a super league.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe principles of solidarity, of promotion, relegation and open leagues are non-negotiable. It is what makes European football work and the Champions League the best sports competition in the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cUEFA and the clubs are committed to build on such strength not to destroy it to create a super league of 10, 12, even 24 clubs, which would inevitably become boring.\u201d<\/p>\n
A leading fans\u2019 group called the reported plans for the new competition \u201cthe last nail in the coffin of the idea that football can be relied upon to regulate itself\u201d.<\/p>\n
Tuesday\u2019s report comes just over a week after Project Big Picture proposals emerged, which were developed by Liverpool and Manchester United and publicly endorsed by EFL chairman Rick Parry.<\/p>\n
The proposals were rejected at a Premier League clubs meeting last week, and described as \u201ca distraction at best\u201d by Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden from the pressing need for the Premier League and EFL to agree a financial rescue package amid the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n
Kevin Miles, the chief executive of the Football Supporters\u2019 Association, was scathing in his assessment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe latest reports of plots, allegedly involving Manchester United and Liverpool, to create a European Super League, expose the myth that billionaire owners care about the English football pyramid, or indeed anything other than their own greed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has to be the last nail in the coffin of the idea that football can be relied upon to regulate itself: these billionaire owners are out of control.<\/p>\n
\u201cFootball in all its forms in the UK, from grassroots to the top tier, occupies far too important a place in our society, our culture and our communities to be jeopardized by an even greater concentration of wealth in the hands of half a dozen big clubs.<\/p>\n
\u201cDecisive action is now needed to protect the game we love. We have already been promised by government a fan-led review of the governance and regulation of football: that process needs to start as a matter of urgency before the super-rich custodians of the biggest clubs can do any more damage.\u201d<\/p>\n
A FIFA spokesperson said in a statement to the PA news agency that it \u201cdoes not wish to comment and participate in any speculation about topics which come up every now and then and, for which, institutional structures and regulatory frameworks are well in place at national, European and global level\u201d.<\/p>\n
Manchester United have so far declined to comment, while Liverpool have also been approached for a response.<\/p>\n
The reports have surfaced as discussions continue on the future format of the Champions League and Europa League for the next broadcast cycle from 2024.<\/p>\n
Wall Street bank JP Morgan is reported to be in talks over debt financing for the competition, to be repaid from future broadcast revenues.<\/p>\n
Former United defender Gary Neville joined the FSA in condemning the reported plans.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe big issue that I have with it is that in the middle of a pandemic, with football on its knees at so many different levels, the idea that a package is being put together to set up a new league when clubs are scrambling around trying to pay wages just seems to be another wound for football,\u201d he told Sky Sports.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am for progression of football, new competitions and new formats but it doesn\u2019t feel that it is the right time to be talking about this.<\/p>\n
\u201cFans are getting to the point where they don\u2019t care any more. Football is going to eat itself soon. Fans are starting to dislike large elements of what they are supporting and that can\u2019t be allowed to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
LaLiga president Javier Tebas added: \u201cThese \u2018underground\u2019 projects only look good when drafted at a bar at five in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n
