Farah covered 21.330 kilometers in an hour to break the previous record of 21.285km set by Haile Gebrselassie in 2007.<\/p>\n
The 37-year-old was around 10 meters behind record pace at the halfway stage but gradually increased the tempo after the pacemaker made way and was ahead of schedule when Belgium\u2019s Bashir Abdi took over the lead with five minutes remaining.<\/p>\n
Farah powered back in front with a minute to go and was so focused that he appeared not to realize when the hour was up and kept running before being told he could stop.<\/p>\n
In an on-track interview Farah said: \u201cThat\u2019s incredible. I\u2019m very happy to break the world record today.<\/p>\n
\u201cMe and Bashir Abdi worked together. I\u2019m so pleased for him and for myself and what an amazing way to do it and show the people what is possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel tired but at the same time in the middle part of the race we had to work hard. I wasn\u2019t sure what we were doing and had to help each other and get through it and it\u2019s nice to break a world record.\u201d<\/p>\n
There was also a world record in the women\u2019s event as Holland\u2019s Sifan Hassan set a new best of 18.93km.<\/p>\n
Hassan outsprinted Kenya\u2019s Brigid Kosgei in the closing stages, although Kosgei was later disqualified for stepping off the track.<\/p>\n
World heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 13.57s and sixth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.84m.<\/p>\n
