Xbox, which is part of Microsoft, confirmed it had filed a statement with a court in California supporting Epic\u2019s request to keep access to Apple\u2019s software development tools.<\/p>\n
Apple said last week it \u201cwould not make an exception\u201d for Fortnite after it removed the game from its store for adding an in-game payment option which circumvented Apple\u2019s own payment system, something Apple says is against its guidelines.<\/p>\n
The firm also said it would revoke Epic\u2019s membership to its developer program, which provides access to the software needed to build apps and games for Apple devices.<\/p>\n
That decision would impact other Epic software beyond Fortnite, including its Unreal Engine gaming software, which is used by many other game developers, including Microsoft, to build their own products on.<\/p>\n
Last week, Epic filed a court injunction in an effort to prevent Apple cutting it off, a move which has now been backed by Microsoft.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday we filed a statement in support of Epic\u2019s request to keep access to the Apple SDK for its Unreal Engine\u201d, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said in a tweet.<\/p>\n

In the statement, filed to a US district court in California, Microsoft\u2019s general manager for gaming developer experiences, Kevin Gammill, said: \u201cEpic Games\u2019 Unreal Engine is critical technology for numerous game creators including Microsoft.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that many other, smaller developers can not afford to build their own gaming engines, so are reliant on third-party software such as the Unreal Engine.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a result, Epic\u2019s Unreal Engine is one of the most popular third-party game engines available to game creators, and in Microsoft\u2019s view there are very few other options available for creators to license with as many features and as much functionality as Unreal Engine across multiple platforms, including iOS,\u201d Mr Gammill said.<\/p>\n
\u201cDenying Epic access to Apple\u2019s SDK and other development tools will prevent Epic from supporting Unreal Engine on iOS and macOS, and will place Unreal Engine and those game creators that have built, are building, and may build games on it at a substantial disadvantage.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause iOS is a large and growing market for games, Apple\u2019s discontinuation of Unreal Engine\u2019s ability to support iOS will be a material disadvantage for the Unreal Engine in future decisions by Microsoft and other game creators as to the choice of an engine for new games.<\/p>\n
\u201cApple\u2019s discontinuation of Epic\u2019s ability to develop and support Unreal Engine for iOS or macOS will harm game creators and gamers.\u201d<\/p>\n
The dispute between Apple and Epic began when a payment option was added to Fortnite which allowed users to pay for in-game items directly through Epic.<\/p>\n
According to the rules of both Apple and Google\u2019s app store, purchases made for digital items within an app must be done through Apple or Google\u2019s respective payment system, from which the companies then take a cut of up to 30%.<\/p>\n
Both Apple and Google then removed Fortnite from their app stores, although mobile users on Google\u2019s Android can still download the app directly from Epic\u2019s website.<\/p>\n
The incident reignited debate around app store payment systems, which some developers have previously called unfair and anti-competitive.<\/p>\n
Apple has said Epic created the problem \u201cfor itself\u201d but that it could \u201ceasily be remedied\u201d if it updated Fortnite to \u201ccomply with the guidelines they agreed to and which apply to all developers\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe App Store is designed to be a safe and trusted place for users and a great business opportunity for all developers,\u201d the iPhone maker said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe won\u2019t make an exception for Epic because we don\u2019t think it\u2019s right to put their business interests ahead of the guidelines that protect our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n
