We start with the sad news of Charlie Daniels\u2019 death. Daniels was an American singer, songwriter and\u00a0multi-instrumentalist\u00a0known for his contributions to\u00a0Southern rock,\u00a0country, and\u00a0bluegrass music. He was best known for his number-one country hit \u201cThe Devil Went Down to Georgia\u201d. Daniels was active as a singer and musician from the 1950s. He was inducted into the\u00a0Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame\u00a0in 2002, the\u00a0Grand Ole Opry\u00a0in 2008, the\u00a0Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum\u00a0in 2009, and the\u00a0Country Music Hall of Fame\u00a0in 2016.<\/p>\n

Daniels was born in\u00a0Wilmington, North Carolina, and raised on a musical diet that included\u00a0Pentecostal\u00a0gospel, local bluegrass bands, and the\u00a0rhythm & blues\u00a0and country music from Nashville\u2019s 50,000-watt AM radio stations\u00a0WLAC\u00a0and\u00a0WSM. In 2016, he shared memories of his youth and baseball in Wilmington when he wrote the foreword for a book on the\u00a0Tobacco State League. As a teenager, Daniels moved to the small town of\u00a0Gulf, Chatham County, North Carolina. He graduated from high school in 1955. Already skilled on\u00a0guitar,\u00a0fiddle,\u00a0banjo, and\u00a0mandolin, he formed a\u00a0rock \u2018n\u2019 roll\u00a0band and hit the road In 2019, Daniels lambasted\u00a0New York Governor\u00a0Andrew Cuomo\u00a0for signing the\u00a0Reproductive Health Act, which legalized abortion until birth under some circumstances,\u00a0tweeting\u00a0\u201cWatch the wrinkles on Cuomo\u2019s face lengthen as the ramifications of the thousands of murders he has sanctioned come to bear on him. The\u00a0NY legislature\u00a0has created a new\u00a0Auschwitz\u00a0dedicated to the execution of a whole segment of defenseless citizens.\u00a0Satan\u00a0is smiling.\u201d <\/p>\n

Daniels married Hazel Juanita Alexander on September 20, 1964. They had one child, a son, Charles Edward Daniels Jr. An avid\u00a0University of Tennessee sports\u00a0fan, he enjoyed hunting, fishing,\u00a0snowmobiling, and other outdoor activities. He was a member of the\u00a0National Rifle Association\u00a0(NRA) and performed on their videos.<\/p>\n

Daniels suffered a major arm injury on January 30, 1980, while digging fence post holes on his farm near Mount Juliet. He suffered three complete breaks in his right arm and two broken fingers when his shirtsleeve caught on a spinning auger. The injury required surgery and sidelined him for four months. Daniels was successfully treated for\u00a0prostate cancer\u00a0in 2001. On January 15, 2010, Daniels was rushed to the hospital after suffering a stroke while snowmobiling in Colorado. He was released two days later. During a doctor visit on March 25, 2013, Daniels was diagnosed with a mild case of\u00a0pneumonia\u00a0and admitted to a Nashville hospital for a series of routine tests. The tests revealed that a\u00a0pacemaker\u00a0was needed to regulate his heart rate. One was put in on March 28, and Daniels was released from hospital within days. Daniels died on July 6, at the age of 83 of a hemorrhagic stroke at Summit Medical Center in Nashville. <\/p>\n
