In my Out&About I received a little piece on her and in our editorial pages and on the website, you will be able to read a very nice bio on Mary. I received the news from the United Irish Counties Association of New York who said, “It is with broken hearts that we inform you of the passing of Mary Mc Mullan in the early evening of Saturday 2 May. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Hugh McTaggert, Francis McTaggart, Anne O’Sullivan, and the McTaggart and Naughton Families on the passing of their cherished sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend.

“A proud native of Rasharkin, County Antrim, Mary was a longtime delegate to the UICANY from the County Derry Society. A soft-spoken lady and an unassuming yet effective leader, her involvement in and dedication to so many other organizations is numerous. Mary served as the 37th President of the UICANY from 1995 to 1996, the 2nd woman and the first (and only to date) from Northern Ireland to serve in this role. She had chaired our annual dinner dances as well as our annual feis over the years. At present, she was a member of our Board of Directors as well as serving as Coordinator for our January dinner dance.
“Mary was elected as the first woman President of the County Derry Society of New York in 1979 and twice served in that capacity. At present, Mary was the treasurer of the Society. Mary was also the Treasurer on the Executive Board of the New York Irish Center in Long Island City. An active member of the LAOH in Brooklyn, Mary only recently handed over her duties as Treasurer of her division. Her accomplishments in the Irish American community are many.

“Above all else, Mary was a woman of great faith, and there is no doubt the Gates of Heaven were opened wide awaiting her arrival before she took her last breath. We can take comfort that, after thirty years, Mary is finally reunited with the love of her life, John. She will also relish once again in the company of her brother Charlie and his wife Sarah, and her sister Nan and her husband Frank Naughton. She has left behind a wealth of family and friends and she will be so sorely missed, but will never ever be forgotten. May she rest in peace.”

Mary Mc Mullan will be sadly missed by all who knew her and crossed her path, RIP.

Now back to myself as I am sure we are all in the same boat, cocooned in our rooms and I do mean rooms as that is where I am: working from my bedroom.

No, I did not say barroom I said bedroom with blank walls, now I know what jail looks like, just kidding. You have to have a laugh as well. You know with this virus there is no class distinction and as we all have the same goal to try and avoid it no matter what you work at and safe and healthy.

I got a very nice poem from Tourism Ireland that I am sure you will like. ‘I will return into her arms, gently into the fold. To see her waters and her hills and all the beauty she beholds.’ Now I knew you would like that and you can see more on our website www.irishexaminerusa.com and click on the Travel section at the top of the front page and it will also bring you to a video I am again sure you will like. Gee, I am getting good at this just sitting at my computer and thinking about all I am missing having not been Out&About.

Well with all that is happening with this Coronavirus here is another bit of bad news and that is that the Irish Repertory Theatre has announced that in light of the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis the 2020 Gala Benefit Production, Celebrating Our Pal: The Musicals of Harold Prince, which was to celebrate the legendary Broadway impresario Harold Prince and honor Loretta Brennan Glucksman, has been postponed. Originally scheduled for June 8, a new date for the gala will be announced in the coming months.

In response to the COVID-19 hiatus Irish Rep has launched two online series to bring the best of Irish theatre directly to their audiences, with more programming to be announced in the coming weeks. The Show Must Go Online is a series of homemade videos on their social media channels of Irish Rep company members performing their favorite songs, poems and monologues from Irish and Irish American plays, poets and musicians. Meet the Makers is a series of conversations with scholars and Irish Rep artists discussing their work and theatre in general. Follow the hashtags #TheShowMustGoOnline, #IRTMeettheMakers, and #IrishRepOnline or visit IrishRep.org for more information.

The Irish Rep, co-founded by Producing Director Ciarán O’Reilly and Artistic Director Charlotte Moore, celebrates the very best in Irish theatre, from the masters to the new generation of Irish and Irish American writers who are transforming the stage. In the past nearly 50,000 audience members annually attended productions at Irish Rep’s theatre located in the heart of New York’s Off-Broadway community. Once there, they witness Irish Rep’s engaging perspective on the Irish and their unique contributions to the world of drama. The beautiful example of The Irish Repertory Theatre is when you go there its like home from home and with Charlotte and Ciaran at the helm what else could you ask for? Now that is what it is all about when you cross the Atlantic and you feel the friendliness that is a breath of fresh air, up yea boyo.

Oh, just to brag we got a nice thank you from Michael Dowling, President and Chief Executive Officer at Northwell Health for the piece we ran on him recently that highlighted all the great work he is doing during this Coronavirus epidemic. Now where would yea get it?

That’s it for this week and I hope to see you all again WHEN I am Out&About again…

<div
