Yes I was at the preview of The Seafarer on Saturday night at The Irish Repertory Theatre. It was just fabulous and, let me tell you, it will get your attention for the whole of the show with these superb actors.
I will not show too much favoritism towards any particular one, but I have only to say again that they were all brilliant from start to finish. The casts of actors include Andy Murray, Colin McPhilamy, Michael Mellamphy, Tim Ruddy and Matthew Broderick.
This is just a little snippet of what the story is: After losing yet another job, Sharky has returned home to Dublin to build a new, sober existence with his cantankerous elder brother, Richard, recently blinded in a drunken accident. But it’s Christmas Eve, and the drinks are flowing as old friends convene for an annual game of poker. This year, an immortal stranger from Sharky’s past arrives, raising the stakes to eternal consequence.
Written by Irish playwright Conor McPherson (The Weir, Shining City), The Seafarer premiered at London’s Royal National Theatre in 2006 and was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Play. It premiered on Broadway in December of 2007, where it was nominated for four 2008 Tony Awards, including Best Play.
Two-time Tony Award winner Matthew Broderick performs as Mr. Lockhart, returning to Irish Rep for the first time since his acclaimed company debut in McPherson’s Shining City in 2016.
The director is none other than Ciaran O’Reilly and he has, once again, pulled off another great job; well done!
I urge you all to go and see this as it will also give you a lot of laughs as it is a down to earth show; so be ready to see some of the finest talent seen on stage.
For bookings call (212) 727 2737, visit IrishRep.org and or their box office at 132 West 22nd Street (between Sixth and Seventh Avenues).
This just came in: Due to high demand from our audience and members, we have added eleven performances to The Seafarer run on our Main stage. This show must close on May 24th so don’t miss your chance to see it! Now remember I told you so!
Thanks again to the President of the Irish Business Organization, Nickolas Malito for inviting me to their monthly meeting at the Irish Consulate last Wednesday that had a capacity audience with guest speaker Emma Giles, the brand director for beer at Diageo and she is well qualified I might tell you.
Emma gave a great presentation on Guinness Stout and how it is brewed and also on the other Guinness products that are available here in the United States. I have to say she was very knowledgeable on the subject of beer she knows her stuff let me tell you.
I have to tell you that the IBO is a must for anybody who is interested in meeting people who would like to succeed in business here in New York and it is a great network to be involved in. Yu can contact the by calling (212) 750-8118 or via email at membership@IBONewYork.org.
Everybody that likes music must go and see and Susan Gillespie and Gerard Corbett as they play in a lot of Irish venues in the Tri-State of New York.
I got to hear them in the Irish American Society of Nassau Suffolk and Queens in Mineola and this is what I have to say. They are truly diverse and dynamic entertainers. Their repertoire consists of hundreds of songs ranging from Irish favorites, big band, country and rock and roll to oldies, international, holiday, spiritual and contemporary.
Their comedic banter and stylish charm quickly enables them to get an audience actively involved with each and every performance.
Whether the audience is singing along, dancing away, clapping their hands, tapping their feet or just listening and reminiscing, ‘Susan and Gerard’ have the uncanny ability to always leave you wanting more!
Tuttles is a place you have got to go to and meet your friends this summer, as it has a excellent and spacious beer garden that has a great atmosphere and a full bar. I should say three bars, one on the main floor, one upstairs and the one in the garden.
This is a unique bar and restaurant that is Irish owned and they sell a verity of beers and cocktails so head on down and you will get a céad míle fáilte I promise.
Tuttles Bar and Grill is located at 735 Second Avenue, and you can check out their website at tuttlesnyc.com.
A sad note to finish as we send condolences from The Irish Examiner to the President of the United Ireland Counties Association of New York Tom Tuffy and his family on the passing of his uncle, Father Patrick “Paddy” Tuffy who passed away peacefully in County Sligo last Saturday.
