All party members have been warned of a dissident plot to launch an under-car bomb attack.<\/p>\n
Gerry Kelly, the party\u2019s policing spokesman, said it would not deter elected representatives but would worry members of their families.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cTheir reaction to a surge in republican support is to actually threaten republicans.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is stupid but it is dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last week, Michelle O\u2019Neill, Stormont\u2019s Deputy First Minister, said officers had warned that dissident republicans were planning to attack her and Mr Kelly.<\/p>\n
It came in response to the pair\u2019s attendance at a Police Service of Northern Ireland recruitment event.<\/p>\n
On Monday night, Ms O\u2019Neill indicated that the plot had widened to encompass all Sinn F\u00e9in members.<\/p>\n
She said police had advised that the New IRA was the dissident grouping behind the plan.<\/p>\n
Mr Kelly said: \u201cWhat came home to me when I got threats, and I have gotten threats over the years, was when my children were a bit younger and started saying things like, \u2018Do I need to close the door daddy\u2019, or \u2018Do I need to watch when we go out in the car\u2019, and things like that.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is when it comes home to you.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was part and parcel of what we were as political representatives involved in, so it is the families I think will worry most.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can also say with considerable confidence that there is probably not a single Sinn F\u00e9in representative who will be deterred from pursuing what we have been pursuing, which is an Ireland of equals.\u201d<\/p>\n
