D\u00e1il candidate Pearse Doherty accused Fine Gael of wanting to make people work longer for less.<\/p>\n
The retirement age is set to increase over the next few decades.<\/p>\n
Mr Doherty told RT\u00c9 Prime Time: \u201cWe believe that is completely wrong, people should be able to retire at the age of 65, the cost of doing that is not huge, it is \u20ac450 million.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is worth doing, it is about treating workers with respect.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cAsking people in labor-intensive work to work until they are 68 is wrong.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe economy has to work for its workers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Finance minister Paschal Donohoe said it was about valuing the work that people do.<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cWhat is equally important to those workers is to be able to assure them they have a certain pension.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn order to have that pension in the future we have to have money going into our social insurance fund.\u201d<\/p>\n
