The UK’s Northern Ireland Secretary Julian Smith has asked the speaker of the defunct house to hold a sitting on Friday morning, without the Stormont parties having yet agreed to all the proposals.<\/p>\n
The bold move comes without the DUP or Sinn F\u00e9in having publicly signaled a willingness to agree to the terms of the deal \u2013 called \u201c\u2018New Decade, New Approach\u201d.<\/p>\n
Friday will see a strike by healthcare workers in the region.<\/p>\n
Mr Smith said there was a major financial package on offer from the Government, that would mean the strike would not go ahead if the parties restored the institutions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have had three years of talks and there is finally a good deal on the table that all parties can support,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
T\u00e1naiste Simon Coveney said the deal was \u201cfilled with compromises\u201d.<\/p>\n
Mr Coveney said the people needed to tell their politicians to take the opportunity and seal the deal.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s now time their politicians stepped up and fully represented their constituents,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s time to show leadership and get back to power=sharing in Stormont.\u201d<\/p>\n
The deal represents the governments\u2019 joint assessment of how long-standing wrangles on issues such as the Irish language can be resolved.<\/p>\n
Mr Smith said the parties realized they had reached a critical juncture.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have got one chance to get this right and I am under no doubt that everyone realizes that this chance is now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mr Coveney said political leaders had a choice \u2013 whether to meet the proposals with generosity or negativity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no such thing as a perfect deal and that is why parties have to make choices as to how they respond,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the opportunity for people to take \u2013 the alternatives are not good.\u201d<\/p>\n
The impasse has focused on proposals for Irish language legislation; reform of a contentious Assembly voting mechanism; and plans to make the institutions less susceptible to collapse in the future.<\/p>\n
The parties had been working to a Monday deadline to restore the institutions.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Jeffrey Donaldson, the DUP\u2019s Westminster leader, said the party was not yet in a position to sign up to the proposals.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are in a process of continuing to discuss these matters both internally and externally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to represent the interests of all of the people of Northern Ireland in seeking to get an agreement that ensures that this place is up and running again on a secure and sustainable basis.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sinn F\u00e9in vice president Michelle O\u2019Neill said her party was at Stormont to \u201cdo the business\u201d but stopped short of saying it was content with the governments\u2019 deal.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur determination is to make politics work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is going to take all of the parties to make the politics work.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is going to need to be a sustainable and credible government. It is going to need to be a government that actually has equality at its core.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms O\u2019Neill insisted the deadline was a \u201creal\u201d one.<\/p>\n
