Sweeney stated after England had finished World Cup runners-up that it would make \u201csense\u201d to retain Jones until France 2021, adding that talks would be held \u201cas a matter of urgency\u201d upon their return from Japan.<\/p>\n
A two-day tournament debrief was \u201coverwhelmingly positive\u201d in tone, but Sweeney is now in less haste to extend Jones\u2019 current deal, which has two years left to run.<\/p>\n
\u201cEddie and I have sat down and talked on a number of occasions,\u201d Sweeney said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to discuss it but at the moment he\u2019s fully committed to seeing out the contract until 2021 and we\u2019ll take it from there. We\u2019re chatting about it.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll do whatever we think\u2026.Reading the media over the last six weeks, the camps are pretty split.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome are saying don\u2019t rush into anything, just stay with 2021. Other people are saying you should really do a four-year until France 2023.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll do whatever we think is right for England rugby and it\u2019s got to work for both sides.<\/p>\n
\u201cEddie is committed to seeing out his contract so there\u2019s no looming deadline when we\u2019ll feel we need to make a pressing decision.\u201d<\/p>\n
The post-World Cup debrief took place on November 14 and 15, was chaired by former UK Minister for Sport Hugh Robertson and included feedback from 27 of the 32 players used in Japan.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had one member of the previous review committee following 2015. We had a recently retired England player, a well respected coach, a board member and myself,\u201d Sweeney said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt included Eddie, all the coaching staff, all the operations staff. We had a working dinner. As you\u2019d expect having reached the final, it was overwhelmingly positive.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was nothing that came out of it that was a fundamental miss or anything that needs to be changed.\u201d<\/p>\n
