{"id":5613,"date":"2019-02-12T11:13:36","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T16:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=5613"},"modified":"2019-02-13T11:15:39","modified_gmt":"2019-02-13T16:15:39","slug":"englands-mako-vunipola-out-of-six-nations-with-ankle-injury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=5613","title":{"rendered":"England&#8217;s Mako Vunipola Out of Six Nations with Ankle Injury"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/MakoVunipolaInjured2019_large.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5614\" srcset=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/MakoVunipolaInjured2019_large.jpg 600w, http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/MakoVunipolaInjured2019_large-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>England are reeling after front row colossus Mako Vunipola was ruled out of the remainder of the Guinness Six Nations by an ankle injury.<\/p>\n<p>Vunipola hobbled off in the 44th minute of Sunday\u2019s 44-8 demolition of France at Twickenham and a scan has revealed that he requires 10 weeks of rehabilitation that will be overseen by Saracens.<\/p>\n<p>It is a hammer blow that clouds the countdown to a likely title decider against Wales in Cardiff on February 23.<\/p>\n<p>Vunipola was named man of the match as Ireland were crushed 32-20 in Dublin on the opening weekend and he was superb against France until injury struck to his left ankle.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie Jones has hailed the 28-year-old loosehead prop as world class due to his ability to make explosive impacts in defense and attack, improved scrummaging, work-rate and growing leadership role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s obviously very disappointing to lose Mako at this stage as he\u2019s an important player for us, but it does provide an opportunity for the team to grow,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p>Vunipola also missed the entire autumn series due to a calf strain, giving Exeter\u2019s Ben Moon his opportunity to break into the England team.<\/p>\n<p>Moon and Ellis Genge have made one replacement appearance each so far in the Six Nations and are competing to fill the void.<\/p>\n<p>Moon is the more accomplished set-piece option and Jones admires his selfless and no-nonsense style, describing him as a player who \u201cgoes down the coal mine every day\u201d, while Genge displays greater dynamism around the pitch.<\/p>\n<p>England have not given up hope of Maro Itoje being involved against Wales as the second row totem recovers from a knee ligament tear.<\/p>\n<p>Itoje sustained the injury at the Aviva Stadium and having been ruled out until the final two rounds of the tournament, Jones has floated the possibility of a bench role in Cardiff.<\/p>\n<p>Dylan Hartley will definitely be absent from the Principality Stadium, however, and could also miss the rest of the title quest due to a knee problem.<\/p>\n<p>Hartley\u2019s unavailability has not been felt due to the barnstorming form of Jamie George, but former England and British and Lions hooker Lee Mears believes Hartley will reclaim the number two jersey when fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEddie has been really loyal to Dylan and I can\u2019t see Eddie changing that,\u201d said Mears, who is taking part in the Exchange Everest Rugby Challenge on behalf of Wooden Spoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJamie has been brilliant for a while and he hasn\u2019t been disappointing in any way, but I think Eddie will stick with Dylan because of his leadership skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou couldn\u2019t have Jamie starting and Dylan on the bench \u2013 there\u2019s no point of having Dylan on the bench to Jamie because they\u2019re two very similar players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Eddie\u2019s worried about leadership, then he will start Dylan with Jamie coming off the bench.
