Stop the presses as I have a little bit of good news for both publicans and customers. The New York Hospitality Alliance<\/strong> sent me this so I had to let you know. They said \u201cas we reported, Governor Cuomo announced that effective Monday, April 19, the curfew currently in place for bars and restaurants will be moving from 11 pm to midnight and the curfew for catered events will move from midnight to 1am. <\/p>\n

\u201cGreat news,\u00a0the NYC Hospitality Alliance worked with the City and\u00a0the outdoor dining curfew\u00a0will\u00a0now\u00a0be extended until midnight, from the 11:00PM curfew\u00a0to avoid confusion with the state curfew, and\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0small businesses, workers\u00a0and customers, which we advocated for. If you operate a rooftop, backyard or other outdoor area which operates outside of the city\u2019s Open Restaurants program, you are permitted to extend service until midnight too, but your business is still subject to all stipulations on your liquor license, including if it requires closing before midnight.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n

I have to mention this bit of news as well, as they are very good friends of mine and they support The Irish Examiner USA. New York State Senator Pete Harckham<\/strong> commemorated Irish-American Heritage Month 2021 today by honoring a Cortlandt Manor couple, Dan and Siobh\u00e1n Dennehy<\/strong>, for their substantial contributions to local, state and national organizations regarding immigration and preserving cultural traditions.\u00a0\u201cI congratulate our honorees for the wide scope of their remarkable achievements, which includes a tireless advocacy on behalf of new immigrants,\u201d Harckham said. \u201cDan and Siobh\u00e1n have made a difference in the lives of countless individuals while demonstrating the possibilities inherent in the American Dream are still possible for longtime residents and newcomers alike. They are exemplary figures in the country\u2019s Irish-American population, and I am proud to partner with them here in the 40th Senate District.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harckham presented the Dennehys with Senate Commendation Awards during a virtual ceremony aired live on Facebook. The award ceremony included a quartet of special speakers: State Sen. Timothy M. Kennedy<\/strong> from Western New York, who has worked with the Dennehys on immigration issues over the years; Cathal \u201cChuck\u201d McGreal<\/strong>, chair of the Hudson Valley Irish Fest<\/strong>; Mary Cronin<\/strong>, president of the Lady\u2019s Ancient Order of Hibernians\u00a0Peekskill Division 18<\/strong>; and Westchester County Legislator Colin Smith<\/strong>. Smith actually joined the online celebration from Riverfront Park in Peekskill, where the Hudson Valley Irish Fest takes place each year. Also attending the ceremony were Sue Sheridan<\/strong>, chair of the Peekskill St. Patrick\u2019s Day Parade Committee<\/strong>; Clive Cronin<\/strong>, president of the Westchester County Ancient Order of Hibernians<\/strong>; and Brian O\u2019Reilly<\/strong>, president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 18 Peekskill<\/strong>. The Dennehys have been longstanding leaders in Westchester\u2019s Irish-American community. Dan Dennehy has held numerous\u00a0positions in the Ancient Order of Hibernians, including serving as National Director from 2016 to 2020; currently, he is the organization\u2019s state Immigration Chair. He also founded the Hudson Valley Irish Fest, as well as the Hudson Valley Irish Center<\/strong>, which includes a substantial library focusing on Irish culture and history. Siobhan Dennehy has served since 2003 as executive director of the Emerald Isle Immigration Center<\/strong> in New York City, which provides assistance and immigration services to both Irish and non-Irish immigrant communities. She has also played crucial roles in organizing\u00a0the Hudson Valley\u00a0Irish Fest and running the Hudson Valley Irish Center. And while with the Peekskill Division 18 of the Lady’s Ancient\u00a0Order of Hibernians, Siobhan organized multiple community events for all members of the Peekskill community on navigating the immigration system. The Dennehys also organized and participated in relief efforts to aid Irish American communities in affected areas in and around New York City after Hurricane Sandy. More recently, they worked during the coronavirus pandemic with Irish Americans in Support of Workers: The Meitheal<\/strong> an organization that provided meals and PPE to healthcare workers in New York\u00a0City, Westchester, Rockland and Orange Counties.\u00a0They also worked with Sl\u00e1inte 2020<\/strong>, a collective fundraising effort, to assist the Irish American community in the tri-state area during the pandemic. <\/p>\n

In thanking Harckham for the Senate Commendation, Siobh\u00e1n Dennehy acknowledged the support of her husband\u2014 \u201ca force of nature,\u201d she said\u2014and the first to respond when there is an issue in the community. Quoting an old Irish saying, Siobh\u00e1n Dennehy added, \u201cYou don\u2019t get anything done unless you pull together. It is the friends with us at this event and organizations represented here today that we call upon to help us if we think we can help. <\/p>\n

In praising his wife\u2019s work on immigration, Dan Dennehy said, \u201cSiobh\u00e1n has kept the Irish \u2018golden door\u2019 open for every other ethnic group, every person.\u201d He added that he and his wife were both humbled by Harckham\u2019s recognition during Irish-American Heritage Month. Irish-American Heritage Month is an annual celebration of the history and culture of the Irish people here in the U.S. Coinciding with St. Patrick\u2019s Day on March 17, the celebration spans the entire month of March, and commemorates how the Irish people have influenced and contributed to American society at large.
\nWell done to both of you Dan and Siobhan.<\/p>\n

This sad message came to me from the Cork Association<\/strong>: \u201cIt is with great sadness the County\u00a0Cork association announces the passing of our 60-year member Billy\u00a0Kennealy<\/strong> on 4\/15\/21. We extend our deepest condolences to daughters Tara and Alma. To his grandkids Ronan and Shannon Certa. Billy\u00a0was born in Newmarket Co Cork and was one of 15 kids. He emigrated to the United States in 1953 working in a ranch trailing cattle and riding in rodeos. In 1957 he was drafted to the United States army serving in France. On his discharge he came to NY and decided to stay where he worked and lived for many years. He married Martina n\u00e9e Feigherty from Co Offaly and were proud parents of Tara and Alma. Billy was a big GAA fan and played hurling in Gaelic park and he served as captain in 1962 to 1963. He was a faithful figure at Gaelic park supporting Cork teams as well as helping out with games.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Billy was part of the County Cork association for 60 years and faithfully marched in the St Patrick day parade and the Yonkers parade every year. He has participated in many functions over the years. His\u00a0wake will take place on Wednesday, April 21st – 4-8pm and Thursday, April 22nd, 2-6pm. at Pelham\u00a0Funeral Home (64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham NY).\u201d<\/p>\n
