Fifteen year old Dorothy Landers paid a visit to her uncle Maurice in Florida last February.

It being her first visit and having traveled from Ireland Dorothy was very aware and observant of her new surroundings, so much so that she wrote a poem to record her impression of what to her was a completely new world.

Dorothy vividly expresses her personal feelings on the impact of her new surroundings and conveys to us the everlasting influence of her first visit to Florida.

Well done Dorothy! We look forward to many great poems in the years to come!

Florida

I'm so amazed by sights I've never seen before
The blazing, hot, molten sun heating me to the core
The smell of sun cream and the salty tropic sea
I'm so happy to be here, I'm happy as could be

A county full of theme parks with shops and sights abound
An infamous orange on a number plate is on every car around
Sun tanned skin and tattoos on every local's arm
I admit the shabby, stucco houses even hold a sunny charm

Feeling kind of woozy after so many bumpy rides
I would swear I was having a meltdown within my insides
I really don't want to leave since it's always summer here
And I know that once I'm back in Ireland there'll be rainy
skies that'll make tear
