In the perplexed topsy turvey way of our modern high pressure world, against a background of Recession, confused politics and far reaching international affairs, there is a tendency to overlook the everyday preoccupied creature we call the human being and more particularly the elderly.

Emotions like affection, understanding, warmth, kindness, tenderness are terms that seem strangely out of tune in the discordant time we live in. Even everyday common courtesies appear to be drowning in the melee. Yet there are exceptional people in our society who have the strength to rise above it all and help those in need.

A few years ago Edward Broderick of Rockaway Beach, NY wrote this poem about two ladies in charge of a local senior center. His poem is an inspiration, it reminds us there are people in the world who do wonderful work, who rise above the rat race and provides us with something more sustainable to believe in, something that takes us out of ourselves and identifies us with a side of life that now, more that ever, needs our support.

Angels on the Boulevard

The preacher said "there are everyday Angels all over town"
To see them you just have to look around.
It didn't take any time nor was it hard.
To find two Angels on the Boulevard.

There is a haven on 90th Street
Where people of age gather to meet
It is here you will find two ladies of grace
Who can help with the problems you are given to face
Their key is a smile and a soft word.
A welcome as warm
As a summer's morn
Yes the good Padre knows his world well
And I'm sure you may have an angel story to tell.
So Come In. You'll be welcomed by Janet or Pat.
Once you witness the goodness they weave
From the Hammel Center you will not want to leave.
