Out & About

We lost a great man last week and that was Governor Hugh Carey who I can tell you did some great things for New York.
He was always very proud of being Irish and he visited Ireland very often and was a great man to sing an Irish tune with; may he rest in peace.
I did go the the Mass for Governor Carey at Saint Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue and got to meet Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and a host of other dignitaries like Representative Peter King, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Tom Suozzi, Dermot Kelly, Paul Hurley, Joe Ruane, Mick Glynn, Mary O'Dowd and lots more.
I would like to also send our condolences to the Carey family from all the staff here at The Irish Examiner newspaper.
We here at the newspaper were very lucky have had a great intern over from Belfast for the last six weeks working with us and what a fabulous person she was too!
Her name is Danielle Neeson and she was very good! Thanks to Denis Mulcahy and Project Children who sponsored so many interns here in New York for the summer in order to gain work experience here. Again it's all thanks to Project Children.
What about the rain we had Sunday? I thought we were all going to drown as it just never stopped and, of course, I was in the city... well not out in, but looking out at it and seeing all the poor souls getting wet walking around in it. Ah well, I had a nice cold pint in my hand.
There are some good shows coming up as summer draws to a close.
David Keating asked me to put the word out and I am quite happy to as this is what we do at The Irish Examiner newspaper.
The Irish horror film director is bringing a live dance show to the NYC Fringe Festival.
Just a few weeks after the premier of his Hammer Horror film Wake Wood, David Keating is back in New York with a show in Fringe NYC.
Never Look In The Mirror When You're Dancing, a love story spanning almost 80 years, is a family affair for Keating.
His wife, Kay Scorah, wrote the show and appears in it alongside New York twin dancers Faith Kimberling and Erin Jennings, and his son Sean Keating created the music.
His film Wake Wood stars Timothy Spall (Harry Potter, The King's Speech) and Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire).
So how different is directing horror films from a thought provoking dance show about love, loss and the occasional foxtrot? "They're more similar than you'd think!" says Keating.
Never Look In The Mirror When You're Dancing opens at the 4th Street Theatre (83 East 4th Street) on Monday August 22nd and runs to the 28th.
Visit the FringeNYC website for bookings: www.fringenyc.org/basic.

Tryst by Karoline Leach directed by Joe Brancato is still playing at the Irish Repertory Theatre (132 West 22nd Street) through August 21st and you can still buy tickets for this riveting romantic thriller set in Edwardian London.
Part romance, part psychologicthriller, Tryst tells the story of handsome con-man George Love, who preys on well-off women, wooing them, marrying them, and leaving them penniless and husbandless the day after the honeymoon... that is, until he meets his match in lonely milliner Adelaide Pinchin.
It is is an intense and tantalizing play intended for mature audiences.
The 1st Irish Festival, powered by Origin Theatre Company, runs from September 5th through October 3rd.
1st Irish is New York's first and only all-Irish theatre festival.
