Out & About

Ireland's rugby captain, the legendary Brian O'Driscoll at the NYAC last week

Well, well... I was right last week in my Out and About as there was nothing but rain all week, even though I purchased some swimming goggles as I hoped to have a swim, ah maybe later this week.

I never made to the Craic Gay and Lesbian Film Festival despite promising Terrance Mulligan that I would.

Sorry Terrance maybe next time. I wonder would they have missed me? Nah, I don't think so.

It must have been a nice reception at the Irish Arts Center though and, guess what, The Irish Examiner newspaper's upcoming Woman of the Year was there... We'll will be seeing the New York City Council Speaker on July 7th.

When you read this column we've already been to the Origin Theatre Company's Benefit Showcase that was hosted on Monday evening by Mutual of America.

There was a great turn out for this event. I had a few cocktails to get the night started thanks to George Heslin the theatre's Artistic Director who extended an invitation to our Editor and myself, and there was, of course, a Buffet dinner; oh I love it.

Talking about theatre the Irish Repertory Theatre will be presenting Tryst by Karoline Leach and directed by Joe Brancato on the   Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage, from July 1st until August 21st.

Tryst is a riveting romantic thriller set in Edwardian London.

Part romance, part psychological thriller, Tryst tells the story of handsome con-man George Love, who preys on well-off women, wooing them, marrying them, and leaving them penniless and husbandless the day after the honeymoon... that is, until he meets his match in lonely milliner Adelaide Pinchin.

Tryst is an intense and tantalizing play intended for mature audiences.

You can buy tickets now by calling The Irish Repertory Theatre (132 West 22nd Street New York) at (212) 255-0270 or visiting their website at www.irishrep.org.

As we are taking theatre, is it true that the Irish Voice publisher Niall O'Dowd is running for the President of Ireland? Is it true? Yes, it is as it was all over the papers in Ireland and on the radio and television...

Gee, if he wins will he invite us all over for dinner and cocktails? Yippee, maybe I'll have a go myself as well! Ah but would they know me huh?

Hey Brian O'Driscoll was in town last week for the Irish Network New York (INNYC) who hosted an evening with the legendary Irish rugby captain at the New York Athletic Club on Wednesday.

Over 250 people attended the event which was sponsored by Dillon Eustace.

Well we here at The Irish Examiner newspaper were never invited, maybe we are to big to go to a small event like this though it was held at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan... maybe next time?

Rehearsals are in full swing and Fallen Angel Theatre Company's production of the world premiere of Eva The Chaste by Barbara Hammond is nearing its opening date.

Eva the Chaste, written by Barbara Hammond and produced by Fallen Angel Theatre Company, immerses the audience in the pivotal passions and pressing responsibilities of a woman whose twenty-year sprint away from her past comes crashing to a close as dawn breaks over Dublin Bay.

Hammond set out to reveal, through the use of spoken thought, a genuine and intimate portrait of a woman at the crossroads, both literally and figuratively, of her life.

The script, set in Dublin and Paris, explores the profound and unpredictable bond between a mother and a daughter; the grasp for life at the approach of death; and the road to hell - shining, smooth and paved with good intentions.

Tickets are on sale through Telecharge or can be obtained from the Theatre Row box office.

Previews will be held on July 6 and 7 with the official opening night on July 8.

Eva the Chaste will be performed at The Clurman Theatre on Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues).

Don't miss your opportunity to see this wonderful piece. Call (212) 239-6200 or visit www.telecharge.com.

See you all next week...
