Freddie Starts For The Bhoys As They Down Berwick In The Cup

All smiles from new Bhoy Freddie Ljungberg (SNS))

Celtic struggled for long period's on Berwick Rangers' east-European-style pitch during their Scottish Cup victory on Sunday, but goals by Daniel Majstorovic and Scott Brown saw them through to the next round.

Former Arsenal midfielder and legend Freddie Ljungberg made his debut for the club, but with a capacity crowd of 3,877, their were few Celtic fans to mark the occassion.

Rangers' fans thought they could sense an upset early when Darren Gribben put the ball in the visitor's net, but the linesman indicated an offside and they would see few other chances of victory.

Celtic's first goal started with a long ball deep into the box from Charlie Mulgrew which Andy McLean tried clearing... unsuccessfully, the ball falling to Majstorovic, who made no mistake, rifling the ball past the 'keeper into the goal.

Scott Brown replaced Ljungberg in the 64th minute and he quickly made an impact, taking the ball past two defenders in the box and angling a shot back into the corner of the net.

Manager Neil Lennon was happy to give Freddie a start in the cup game, telling reporters that, "He is a wee bit rusty. He has not played any competitive football for a couple of months.

"We felt it was a good opportunity today to blood him.

"He will benefit from that and the more he trains and plays, the stronger he will get."

Ljungberg was also happy with the start saying, "It was a hard field to play on, more of a fighting game. I just want to keep on playing.

"We are very happy that we have won the game."
