Out & About

Happy birthday Therese!

Happy Birthday to The Irish Examiner's Woman of the Year Therese Crowe who is celebrating her 75th birthday.

One of the greatest stalwarts of the GAA sideline team anywhere in the world is Tipperary woman Ms. Therese Crowe.

For over four decades, Therese has ministered to the needs of New York players, so we wish her all the success and happiness in the future from all the staff in the office.

When you're in Manhattan either visiting or working, call in to the Pershing Square Restaurant on 42nd Street (opposite Grand Central Terminal) which is owned by Buzzy O'Keeffe. If you do you'll get to meet one of the waitresses Corrina O'Connor from Wexford in Ireland and boy, she is a stunner and very pleasant to meet let me tell yea.

Houndstooth Pub (520 8th Avenue at 37th Street) had a very special guest bartender last Wednesday night as Dermuid Hogan was pouring the drinks to a capacity crowd that came from all over to see him perform, and a good job he did too! Maybe this could be his new profession?

Larry Kirwin and Black 47 are celebrating their Twentieth Anniversary at Connolly's Bar & Restaurant on 47th Street in early November and all are invited. I thought Larry said he was buying, now I'm not too sure...

The Cork Association is up in arms because I forgot to mention some of the very important people who are the back bone of the Cork Association... Oh, I must remember it's the County Cork B.P.&P. Association as Mary Waters will have my life.

Here we go then: Mary Hurley, Martin Hurley (I wonder are they related?), Theresa Finn, Mary Naughton, John Browne, the great Denis Forde, who's still fighting, Timothy Murphy, Deirdre O'Hea, not to forget Patrick Hurley (who is he?) and Larry Finn. Did I forget anyone Mary?

Oh yes, past Presidents Dan McCarthy, Bill O'Driscoll, Joseph Murphy, Sean O'Driscoll, Martin Hickey, Michael Dorgan, John Browne (did I mention him earlier? Ah, so what), James O'Driscoll, Patricia Young O'Connor, Catherine O'Shea; almost forgot again, Mae O'Driscoll and Mary Power - the current president. I think I left no one out this time, and again what a night! Of course, the Lord Mayor of Cork Councilor Dara Murphy was in attendance too.

Thanks to Bushmills Irish Whiskey who had a reception at Papillon Bistro (on 54th Street just off Madison Avenue) last Wednesday night where some of the top restaurant entrepreneurs were present including Martin Whelan of Stout, Maggies, St. Andrews and Fat Annies.

Niamh Conway (who I have a habit of spelling her name wrong, but she always forgives me) was also in attendance with Fiona the manager from Downtown Galway Hooker (on 7th Avenue and 10th Street) and as you all know, the other Galway Hooker (on 36th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues) which is one of the best places to be when you are hanging out,

Paul Hurley of P.D. Hurley's and more recently O'Casey's (on 41st Street off Fifth Avenue) was also there - good on you Paul, as was Eugene Wilson of Channel 4, who will be celebrating his Fifth Anniversary on this Friday (the 30th). All are welcome.

Foley's Bar & Restaurant on 35th street was well represented by John and his son Sean Clancy. They have the best baseball artifacts ever seen in New York. I did not see any Hurleys hanging up on the walls, it must be the Kerry thing; no kidding, this is one of the finest restaurants in Manhattan.

I met an old friend Tony Cullinane, the owner of Whiskey Trail off Fifth Avenue, who I promised I will call this week for a cold one.

The two boys Tommy Byrne and Frank McCole, the owners of Papillon Bistro and Bar, are just two great hosts and let me tell you the food is superb so call on in and say hello to the lads. They also have Lillies (13 West 17th Street) that will blow your mind for what they build, these two Irish men.

See you all next week.
