Unemployment Up To 12.2%

The seasonally adjusted Live Register total increased from 412,900 in June to 423,400 in July, an increase of 10,500.

In the year to July 2009, there was an unadjusted increase of 197,495 (up by 82.9%).

This compares with an unadjusted increase of 197,781 (an increase of 89.6%) in the year to June 2009.

The monthly increase in the seasonally adjusted series consisted of an increase of 5,100 men and an increase of 5,500 women.

The average net weekly increase in the seasonally adjusted series in July was 2,100, which compares with a figure of 3,000 in the previous month.

The standardised unemployment rate in July was 12.2%. This compares with 10.2% in the first quarter of 2009, the latest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate from the Quarterly National Household Survey.

In the month, the estimated number of casual and part-time workers on the Live Register was 37,415 men and 32,138 women.
