Hartson Begins Treatment For Cancer

Celtic got their European campaign off to exactly the wrong sort of start last Tuesday afternoon when they were defeated 1-0 at Parkhead by Dinamo Moscow.

Manager Tony Mowbray, who was hoping to kick off his reign at the club with an early victory, was instead confronted with an early goal from their opponents who, with just seven minutes elapsed, scored the only goal of the game.

Dinamo Moscow certainly looked the sharper team in the opening minutes, midfielder Luke Wilkshire forcing an early save from Artur Boruc in the fourth minute.

Less than two minutes later, the home side were one goal down after Alexander Kerzhakov picked up the ball on the left wing, firing it low into the six-yard box where Alexander Kokorin was waiting to deflect it into the net.

Celtic did have their own chances though, the best of which fell to Georgios Samaras in the second half, who missed an easy header from close range.

John Hartson, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer that has spread to his brain and lungs, has begun treatment for his condition at Singleton Hospital in Swansea.

The former Celtic, Arsenal and Welsh international, has undergone two rounds of surgery so far but has been moved out of intensive car and onto a cancer ward at the hospital.

His family said in a statement that, "We're pleased John has been able to start his chemotherapy and move forward with his cancer treatment.

"We'd like to reiterate our thanks to the public for the tremendous support they are showing John and the family."
