Children's Rights Referendum Delayed Until 2009

The proposed referendum on childrens' rights has been put on hold until 2009, the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern told the Dáil on Tuesday afternoon.

He insisted that the poll could not take place until the report by the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children has been completed, meaning that it would be next year before people could have their say on the proposed change to the Constitution.

"In my view it will be into 2009," he said, "because if the committee finishes its work even in the autumn, to have discussions between the parties and to come to an agreement so that we can have a successful referendum it will go into 2009."
