"There Will Be Oscars"

Glen Hansard receives his Academy Award (AMPAS)

It was a European night at this year's Ocsar ceremony as all the top acting awards went across the pond. Daniel Day-Lewis won the second Best Actor Oscar of his career for his portrayal of a ruthless oil prospector in 'There Will Be Blood.'

The actor, whose first Oscar came for his performance in the 1989 Irish film 'My Left Foot,' had been the overwhelming favorite to claim the Oscar after sweeping top honors at several award shows this year.

Other nominees for the award were George Clooney (Michael Clayton), Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd), Tommy Lee Jones (In the Valley of Elah) and Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises).

Day-Lewis knelt as he received his award from actress Helen Mirren, last year's winner for her role in 'The Queen': "That's the closest I'll ever come to getting a knighthood." He joked before adding. "My deepest thanks to the members of the academy for whacking me with the handsomest bludgeon in town."

Former buskers Glen Hansard and partner Markéta Irglová won the Oscar for Best Original Song for 'Falling Slowly' from the hit indie movie 'Once'.

Hansard's acceptance speech went as follows: "Thanks! This is amazing. What are we doing here? This is mad. We made this film two years ago. We shot on two Handicams. It took us three weeks to make. We made it for a hundred grand. We never thought we would come into a room like this and be in front of you people. It's been an amazing thing. Thanks for taking this film seriously, all of you. It means a lot to us. Thanks to the Academy, thanks to all the people who've helped us, they know who they are, we don't need to say them. This is amazing. Make art. Make art. Thanks."

After the show, Hansard revealed the pair plan to tour the US in the near future, but ruled out any more movie roles for now.

"We'll probably do a bit of a tour over here in America in the next couple of months.

"I'd like to think we'll play a few gigs in Ireland... but basically getting back to music. I mean, acting's not really my thing."

Hansard previously starred as one of The Commitments in the 1991 movie of the same name and is best known in Ireland as the frontman of The Frames.

Hansard and Irglová were obviously thrilled with their Oscar win.

"When we were kids, we used to watch the Oscars every year and talked about what people were wearing," Glen said following the win. "It's amazing to be here tonight." Glen and Marketa beat off three separate challenges from the movie Enchanted to win the statuette.

"My mother was sitting beside me and she was just so nervous - she's been so nervous since we were nominated," said Glen. "I was just welling up."

"These days films are being made for different reasons like money, and art is being compromised," added Marketa. "I think people feel this film was done from a very pure point and an artistic one. I also think it's a story of love and we can all connect with that."
