The Gunners Go Five Clear At The Top

Manchester City Win Derby Game Against United, Chelsea Hold Liverpool

Aston Villa 4 Newcastle United 1


In Saturday's early game, a hat-trick from John Carew inspired Villa to a 4-1 home victory to leave Kevin Keegan still searching for his first win since he returned to the Magpies. Newcastle did open the scoring through Michael Owen in the fourth-minute at Villa Park and it was still 1-0 at the half. Wilfred Bouma equalized for Villa in the 48th minute before Carew's put Martin O'Neill's side ahead three minutes later. Carew headed his second in the 72nd minute and then added third from the penalty spot after Stephen Carr handled in the area to complete the scoring.

Bolton Wanderers 0 Portsmouth 1


Portsmouth won with a disputed Lassana Diarra goal at the Reebok. Diarra scored in the 80th minute despite being in an offside position when the ball was deflected to him off Kanu. Pompey were thankful to 'keeper David James as he pulled off a late wonder save from Tamir Cohen.

Middlesbrough 1 Fulham 0


'Boro's Jeremie Aliadiere scored in the 11th minute at the Riverside. Gary O'Neil passed down the right and Aliadiere beat the offside trap before he nut-megged Fulham goalkeeper Antti Niemi.

Everton 1 Reading 0


Everton went closer to Champions League qualification with a 1-0 victory over Reading at Goodison which sent the Royals into the EPL relegation zone. Phil Jagielka's first goal for Everton in the 62nd minute condemned Steve Coppell's side to their seventh consecutive defeat, and their ninth on the road so far this season.

Derby County 0 Tottenham Hotspur 3


At Pride Park, Robbie Keane gave Spurs the lead in the 68th minute. Younes Kaboul added a second goal nine minutes from time from Chimbonda's knockdown. Spurs were awarded a penalty in injury-time after Alan Stubbs had handled and Dimitar Berbatov converted the spot-kick.

Sunderland 2 Wigan Athletic 0


Sunderland did their EPL hopes no harm with a 2-0 win over Wigan at the Stadium of Light. Roy Keane's men went ahead three minutes before the break when Dickson Etuhu headed past Wigan's Chris Kirkland. Daryl Murphy bagged the second in the 75th minute with a 25-yard screamer.

West Ham United 1 Birmingham City 1


The Hammers took the lead when Freddie Ljungberg ran on to Carlton Cole's flick to score from close range, but the visitors leveled in the 16th minute after West Ham defender Lucas Neill fouled James McFadden inside the penalty area. McFadden took the spot-kick and scored.

Manchester United 1 Manchester City 2


In Sunday's early game, City completed a league double over Utd with a 2-1 win on the day the city remembered the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster. The last time City achieved such a feat was back in 1970. Darius Vassell put City ahead in the 24th minute and Benjani Mwaruwari, headed the second. United replied with an injury-time goal from Michael Carrick but City held on.

Chelsea 0 Liverpool 0


In Sunday's other game, Chelsea were held to a poor 0-0 draw by Liverpool. The visitors had the better of the first half, with Peter Crouch heading missing several good chances.

Arsenal 2 Bolton Wanderers 0


Arsenal went five points clear at the top of the English Premier League in Monday evening's game with a fine performance at Emirates Stadium. Defender Philippe Senderos started the scoring early, heading home Eduardo's corner kick in the fourth minute. That was all for the Gunners in the first half though as Rovers tightened their game and shut down Wenger's men, with the aid of some fine goalkeeping by Brad Friedel. The second-half was more open, but it took until extra time until the win was assured for the North Londoners when Adebayor drilled a shot home to guarantee all three points for his side.
