Derry To Get Makeover By 2010

The Guildhall and Waterloo Square in Derry could be completely transformed by 2010. Councilors in Derry were last week given an early look at the £7m designs for the area which will feature al fresco eating areas, water features, glass sculptures, canopes and a one way access road through Waterloo Square.

Andrew Tindlsey from Building Design Partnership, the group tasked by the Department of Social Development to come up with the plans said he believed the new look for the area could turn it into a "world class space."

"We want to put a vibrancy back into this area and have a focus on it as a great place to shop and eat."

He said he believed that Waterloo Place was the place for market traders to be situated while Guildhall Square could have a dual purpose complete with water features that can be turned off to accommodate markets.

"The canopes in Waterloo Square we believe would be a great place for performance and market trading," he said.

"At night we could have lighting for the water features which we hope will entice people into the city centre and make it a place for a real evening of entertainment."
