The Gunners Go Three Clear At The Top

United Shocked By Bolton At The Reebok

Newcastle United 0 Liverpool 3

In Saturday's early game, Liverpool cruised past Newcastle 3-0 at St James'. Steven Gerrard's piledriver from a short free-kick put the visitors ahead after 28 minutes. Dirk Kuyt added a second within a minute of the restart before sub Ryan Babel made it 3-0 after 66 minutes. It could have been even worse for the Magpies had Shay Given not mounted a determined, and at times solo, defence of his goal.

Arsenal 2 Wigan Athletic 0

Arsenal opened up a three-point lead at the top of the table thanks to a 2-0 win over Wigan. The Gunners made hard work of their win and had to wait until the second period to secure the victory. In the final 10 minutes, William Gallas (83) and Tomas Rosicky (85) sealed the three points.

Bolton Wanderers 1 Manchester United 0

United went down to a 1-0 defeat against Bolton in their EPL clash at the Reebok. Gary Megson's side went ahead after 11 minutes as Anelka took advantage of some poor defending from Gerard Pique. The Spaniard, replacing the injured Vidic, completely missed Ivan Campo's free-kick with an attempted header and the ball fell kindly to Anelka, who fired a crisp drive past Edwin Van der Sar.

Middlesbrough 0 Aston Villa 3

Villa cruised past sorry 'Boro 3-0 at the Riverside. John Carew's finish on the stroke of half-time put Villa ahead before Olof Mellberg doubled the visitors' advantage three minutes into the second period with a powerful effort. 'Boro's woe was compounded as Gabriel Agbonlahor netted his sixth goal of the campaign after 58 minutes.

Manchester City 2 Reading 1

Stephen Ireland scored in stoppage time as City secured a 2-1 win over Reading. Martin Petrov had put the hosts ahead after 11 minutes, scoring from 12 yards after a goalmouth scramble which saw Elano's effort come back off the post. James Harper pulled the visitors level two minutes before the break with a left-footed shot, but Ireland popped up at the death with a brilliant volley.

Birmingham City 0 Portsmouth 2

At St Andrews, an error from Birmingham 'keeper Richard Kingson handed Portsmouth the lead. There seemed to be little danger as Sulley Muntari picked the ball up just inside the penalty area, but his weak shot squirmed through the body of the Jamaican and trickled over the line. And the visitors added a second nine minutes from full-time as Niko Kranjcar fired home.

Everton 7 Sunderland 1

At Goodison, Ayegbeni Yakubu started the rout as his shot careered off the foot of Danny Higginbotham and over the unfortunate Craig Gordon. The Toffees then doubled their advantage as Tim Cahill flashed a close-range drive past Gordon before Steven Pienaar added a third two minutes before the break. Dwight Yorke gave Sunderland a lifeline in first-half stoppage time. But any hopes the Black Cats had of finding a way back were extinguished just after the hour mark as Cahill again took advantage of some more poor defending by Paul McShane to slot past Gordon, and sub Andrew Johnson and Leon Osman completed the rout.

Derby County 0 Chelsea 2

In the late game, Chelsea overcame Derby 2-0 at Pride Park. Salomon Kalou put the visitors ahead after 17 minutes with a neat finish before Shaun Wright-Phillips doubled their advantage with a finish from close range after Frank Lampard's shot had come back off the post. Michael Essien was sent off in stoppage time for lashing out at Derby striker Kenny Miller.

West Ham United 1 Tottenham Hotspur 1

On Sunday, Jermain Defoe missed an injury-time penalty as Spurs were forced to settle for a point at West Ham. The Hammers took the lead against the run of play as Carlton Cole finished off a move started by a mistake from Younes Kaboul. Spurs were denied what looked a penalty late in the first half when Rob Green tripped Robbie Keane, but the visitors did get on level terms as Michael Dawson rose highest to head home. Both sides chased the victory before the late penalty drama looked to have given Spurs their first away win of the season but Green saved from Defoe.

Fulham 2 Blackburn Rovers 2

Stephen Warnock rescued a point for Blackburn with a late equalizer in this 2-2 draw. Danny Murphy put Fulham ahead from the spot - Ryan Nelsen was at fault for the penalty - but Emerton responded. A well-worked move saw Diomansy Kamara fire the Cottagers ahead for a second time only for Warnock to pounce 12 minutes from time.
