The Winds of Change
When the winds of change come blowing
I may well be swept away,
When the autumn leaves are swirling,
I've waited for this day.
I'll be carried with the breeze to pastures new,
Just as I was before
And as my being follows me,
I'll be on the road once more.
I'll reinvent myself and start anew
As I've always done,
New name, clothes, a place to stay,
One step ahead, I have won.
With the first rustle of the leaves,
Crisp and amber, falling,
I'll pack up my baggage,
Another life is calling.
Another world is awaiting me
To make my mark upon it,
Another world not quite so cruel,
A different line, a different sonnet
And as I say farewell to myself again,
I am weeping, filled with woe,
dread, worry uneasiness,
Must I really have to go?
Then all is still, calm and quiet
The sun on my face is warm,
The storm has ended, the birds sing
At last, I will come to no harm.
And though the winds may come again
And I may battle their rapturous call,
I know I will be stronger
And be myself through all.
