Pompey Tops In 7-4 Thriller!

While Arsenal, United, City & Liverpool Keep Pace At The Top

Manchester City 3 Newcastle United 1

In last Saturday's early kick-off at Eastlands, Man City came from a goal down to beat Newcastle 3-1. Obafemi Martins' put the visitors ahead after 29 minutes but City came back through Martin Petrov's shot 10 minutes later and Emile Mpenza's header two minutes into the second half followed by Elano's 87th-minute free-kick gave Sven's men the points.

West Ham United 0 Arsenal 1

EPL table toppers Arsenal maintained their position with a 1-0 win at West Ham. Robin van Persie headed home in the 13th minute. Freddie Ljungberg had an effort ruled out for offside for the Hammers in a game that saw some heavy challenges.

Wigan Athletic 0 Liverpool 1

Liverpool ground out to a 1-0 win at Wigan thanks to substitute Yossi Benayoun. The Isreali gave the Reds a barely-deserved win with goal after 75 minutes. Marcus Bent was unlucky to have his 'goal' ruled out for offside early in the second half.

Portsmouth 7 Reading 4

A record for goals scored in an EPL game was set at Fratton Park. Benjani Mwaruwari opened the scoring after seven minutes and he added a second on 37 minutes but Liam Rosenior gave the Royals hope with a goal on the stroke of half-time. Dave Kitson equalized 3 minutes into the second half but Hermann Hreidarsson headed Pompey back in front, before David James saved a penalty from Nicky Shorey after Papa Bouba Diop handled. In the 70th minute Benjani completed his hat-trick. Niko Kranjcar (75) added a fifth with a header, Shane Long (79) deflected in for the visitors, Sean Davis (81) restored Portsmouth's three-goal advantage, Sulley Muntari added an injury-time penalty and Shorey rounded off the scoring in an amazing game.

Sunderland 1 Blackburn Rovers 2

David Bentley gave Rovers the lead on 53 minutes after Roque Santa Cruz's shot deflected into his path, and the Paraguayan made it two from close range moments later following a defensive cock-up. Grant Leadbitter's last-minute goal was not enough for the Black Cats.

Chelsea 0 Fulham 0

John Terry was taken off with a fractured cheekbone and Didier Drogba was dismissed as Avram Grant had to make do with a 0-0 draw against Fulham in his first home game as Chelsea manager. Drogba, making his return from injury, was sent off for two bookings.

Derby County 1 Bolton Wanderers 1

The EPL's bottom two, fought out a 1-1 draw at Pride Park. After 19 minutes, Kenny Miller latched onto Steve Howard's reverse pass to sidefoot home, but Nicolas Anelka's deflected shot from the edge of the area leveled matters in the 32nd minute.

Birmingham City 0 Manchester United 1

In Saturday evening's kick-off, the Red Devils stuttered to a 1-0 win at Birmingham. Sir Alex Ferguson brought back all the big guns after that embarrassing Carling Cup defeat by Coventry last week. Cristiano Ronaldo capitalized on some poor Blues defending six minutes into the second half to grab the only goal of the night.

Everton 2 Middlesbrough 0

In Sunday's only game, Mikel Arteta returned to the Toffees starting XI and was inspirational in their victory over 'Boro. As well as having a hand in goals from defender Joleon Lescott and a first in English football for the on-loan Steven Pienaar, Arteta was outstanding throughout.

Tottenham Hotspur 4 Aston Villa 4

Spurs' 125th birthday celebrations at White Hart Lane looked to have flopped, along with their team, until they fought back from a 4-1 deficit to draw this important game. Berbatov had started the scoring but two from Villa's Martin Laursen - one from another Paul Robinson clanger - another from Agbonlahor and Gardner's second half strike left them with a mountain to climb. But Chimbonda, Keane and Kaboul scored to help embattled Spurs' manager Martin Jol.
