City Tops In Manchester Derby Seizing England's Top Spot

Chelsea Draw With The 'Pool After Dubious Penalty Call

Porstmouth 3 Bolton Wanderers 1

Sammy Lee has now overseen three outings without a point in charge at the Reebok. Kanu and John Utaka put Pompey ahead after Nicolas Anelka had given Wanderers a surprise lead before a late Matt Taylor penalty sealed the points for the Fratton Park side.

Wigan Athletic 3 Sunderland 0

Emile Heskey converted in the 19th minute from close range after Antonio Valencia's cross had taken a deflection on its way across goal. Referee Mike Riley awarded Wigan a spot-kick after an hour's play following a Danny Collins foul on Antoine Sibierski. Denny Landzaat stroked the ball home comfortably to make it 2-0 before the in-form Sibierski netted for the third straight game, converting from the spot after a Russell Anderson foul on Heskey.

Tottenham Hotspur 4 Derby County 0

Big spending this summer had increased expectations amongst Spurs fans but two defeats from their opening two fixtures had seen pressure mount on manager Martin Jol. But Spurs were soon on the scoresheet as Jermaine Jenas rolled a free-kick to Steed Malbranque, who rifled the ball beyond Stephen Bywater with less than two minutes on the clock. Then, three minutes later, Darren Bent was given too much room in the box before Malbranque took the pass and curled a right-footed effort into the corner. Jenas made it three with a run through the middle of the Derby defense, before striking the ball in off the post. Bent then compounded the Rams' misery after 80 minutes, collecting his first goal for the club since his £16million transfer with a simple header.

Birmingham City 0 West Ham United 1

West Ham's Mark Noble was also on target with a penalty, drilling home to secure a 1-0 win against Birmingham, who had goalkeeper Colin Doyle to blame for hauling Craig Bellamy down in the box.

Fulham 1 Middlesbrough 2

Fulham were denied what looked to be a legitimate injury-time equalizer after a second clanger in a week from goalkeeper Tony Warner helped 'Boro snatch a 2-1 victory. Warner, who gifted Bolton's Heidar Helguson a goal in midweek, was again to blame as Boro equalized through debutant Mido. The Egyptian striker unleashed a tame shot from distance but Warner somehow contrived to turn the ball into his own net to draw the sides level. Earlier, Brian McBride was taken to hospital after injuring his knee as he put the Cottagers in the lead. Lee Cattermole won it four minutes from time when he slotted in Jeremie Aliadiere's cross but when David Healy prodded the ball from point-blank range, Mark Schwarzer appeared to carry the ball over the line. But the striker's effort wasn't allowed by the officials.

Reading 1 Everton 0

Two minutes from the interval, Ulises De la Cruz launched a long throw into the Everton box before Stephen Hunt collected the ball and slide his shot beyond goalkeeper Tim Howard. It was enough to see off the Toffees, who struck the woodwork twice late on through James McFadden and Andy Johnson.

Newcastle United 0 Aston Villa 0

In Saturday's late game, Michael Owen's comeback could not inspire his Newcastle side to mark Sam Allardyce's home debut with three points as they drew 0-0 with Villa. Owen appeared as a 63rd-minute substitute but played little part as the home side had to thank 'keeper Steve Harper for saving them a point. Harper saved Gabriel Agbonlahor's first-half header and tipped a Nigel Reo-Coker effort around the post.

Manchester City 1 Manchester United 0

Geovanni's 31st-minute strike gave his team an unlikely victory in the Manchester derby. United dominated the game but with some wayward finishing coupled with some desperate City defending, they could not find the net. That was not a problem for City for whom Geovanni fired home from outside the box with the aid of a slight deflection off Nemanja Vidic.

Blackburn Rovers 1 Arsenal 1

On Sunday, a mistake by goalkeeper Jens Lehmann cost Arsenal two points against Blackburn as the sides drew 1-1 at Ewood. The Gunners were in the driving seat thanks to a Robin van Persie goal. But with 18 minutes remaining Lehmann allowed a shot from David Dunn to slip through his hands. Blackburn were forced to hang on in the closing minutes after defender Ryan Nelsen was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.

Liverpool 1 Chelsea 1

A controversial penalty from Frank Lampard earned Chelsea a point at Anfield as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Liverpool. Referee Rob Styles adjudged Steve Finnan to have fouled Florent Malouda in the 62nd minute, but the Chelsea player appeared to jump into the Liverpool full-back. Lampard slotted the penalty away to equalize Fernando Torres' first goal for the Reds.
