Government Publishes Energy White Paper

"Energy is a critical issue for the Irish economy. The ambition of the white paper is welcome as it sets a framework for the delivery of a secure, competitive and environmentally sound energy supply."

IBEC, the group representing Irish businesses welcomed the publication of the government's Energy White Paper by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Minister for Communication, Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey last week.

Under the new plans, the government intends to source one-third of Ireland's electricity supply from renewable sources by 2020.

The white paper also details the transfer of the National Grid to Eirgrid, a semi-state body which is independent of the ESB.

According to Mr. Dempsey, the Government is also planning to sell the output of the Aghada power plant to independent suppliers rather than the ESB which, he said, would make electricity cheaper.

Responding to the publication of the report IBEC Director of Policy Danny McCoy said: "Energy is a critical issue for the Irish economy. The ambition of the white paper is welcome as it sets a framework for the delivery of a secure, competitive and environmentally sound energy supply.

"However, this policy must not become a vague expression of intent.

"It will only be credible when it is made clear how targets and objectives set out are to be delivered cost effectively and in a reasonable timeframe," warned Mr McCoy.

"Tackling Ireland's energy difficulties and encouraging business investment requires clarity, certainty and focused direction.

"The Government must, by the summer, follow this policy with clear action plans for its meaningful delivery." he concluded
